Killer Profits

2015

This is a development based on a previous outcome, A Whale in A Goldfish Bowl. I decided to create the image of an orca held in a teardrop shape of water. I wanted this to represent not only the small enclosures that captive orcas are held in, but also the pain and suffering that this inflicts. I created the teardrop by first creating different ink based designs, then editing them together in layers on Photoshop. I also used the whale that I painted in the previous piece.

I then used the teardrops in a communicative poster design, with a play on the word killer whale. I dropped ink onto paper from a height and then edited it in Photoshop to create the blood drops, and then used a red font to compliment the colour of the blood and contrast with the blue of the teardrops. I wanted to convey the simple idea that the marine park industry is worth millions of dollars, and is cultivated at the expense of the health, and often life, of the whales that it displays.
